The Wind Is My Mother: The Life and Teachings of a Native American Shaman

I didn’t find this book very inspirational. I’ve read a number of native american authors, but found this book rather tedious to read due to the style of writing. I’m not sure if that was due to the collaborative writing effort or what. This might be a good book to thumb through and read a chapter to see if you can connect with the spirit of the book or not. In my case, I did not — nothing to do with being open minded or not. I was hoping for more insight, stories, and imagery… The book and stories seemed somewhat superficial, flat, and occasionally boastful. It could just be me, but I’m not sure I would have made it all the way through this book had I not been on jury duty while reading it.

Bear Heart’s teachings are not necessarily consistent with Muscogee (Creek) Indian ethics. It would be best to research the Creek people before taking everything in this book to heart. To gain something from the book is fine; to label the ethics and teachings as Creek may not be altogether true.

I received this book as a gift and have really enjoyed reading it. It really is packed full of great information and ideas. I found myself having to put it down and think about/process the ideas in the book before I could continue reading. I would recommend this book to anyone out there. There is a wealth of great information here.
