  1. I was interested in trying to learn more about the most gentle and effective means of weaning my 12 month old and thought that this book might provide support and advice. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Pro’s: The book has great references related to weaning in a variety of cultures. I found this interesting for the first 5-10 pages. It is grouped by the age of your child for ease of reference.

Cons: I found it to be completely unsupportive of the choice to wean (at any age). Even the last section (for weaning your 3+ year old) read like you hadn’t done enough for your child. I didn’t need to be convinced of the benefits of breastfeeding and I certainly didn’t need for it to be highlighted how traumatic the weaning process would be. I’m already concerned about how to weaning in the best way possible and was looking for a book that would provide suggestions and support.

I thought that I was already nervous about the weaning process – this book only served to increase my stress level. I would most definitely not recommend it to others.

While there is more encouragement to not wean than to wean, this is a wonderful book on the topic of weaning!

…because this book is so detrimental I feel the need to warn women away from it.

Anyone who is considering weaning is already full of emotions about ending the breast feeding journey. Why on earth would this author think that any intelligent mother needs 50 pages of a guilt trip about it? I bought this book for practical advice on how to wean my baby – and my hormonal self – most gently. Instead I’ve been feeling like a horrible, selfish mother since reading it 8 hours ago.

I loved The Nursing Mother’s Companion, and thus, was hoping this would be a perfect sequel. I was looking for tips and ways to wean my toddler… and the 10 pages in this book didn’t really provide any new or different ideas. I am/was specifically stumped by how to wean at nap and bed time (he is used to falling asleep while nursing) and I was hoping this book would provide some new ideas on how to break this habit. But, it didn’t.

  5. The book gave a good deal of information. I liked that it broke it down by ages, as I am trying to wean a toddler. There were some very helpful tips. It’s easy to read and gives some good advice for dealing with people that can’t understand nursing an older child.
