Product Description
A fresh and enlightening new perspective on Mary, Mother of God, and her central importance in the Christian faith, from the author of the highly successful The Lamb’s Supper.
In The Lamb’s Supper, Catholic scholar and apologist Scott Hahn explored the relationship between the Book of Revelation and the Roman Catholic Mass, deftly clarifying the most subtle of theological points with analogies and anecdotes from everyday life. In Hail, Holy Queen, he employs … More >>

We are going to study the Virgin Mary in our home church so I thought I’d read some books on her to prepare.
Since Catholics are very much into Mary I thought I’d read one their books for completeness sake. This one had all perfect ratings so I bought it.
But there’s so much scripture bending and man made arguments that I lost heart pretty quickly that I was getting anything halfway scriptural.
Here’s an example.
Perpetual Virginity
This is the teaching that Mary was and is always a virgin, even though the bible says Jesus had brothers and sisters.
Hahn says this:
“Heretics in the early Church occasionally challenged this teaching, but they never gained much ground…The bulk of their arguments rested on the New Testament passages that refer to Jesus’ “brethren”…This is virtually a nonissue for anyone who has a glancing familiarity with Hebrew customs. The Hebrew word for “brother” is a more inclusive term, applying to cousins as well. In fact, in ancient Hebrew there is no word for cousin.” (Pages 103-104)
Okay — so Jesus didn’t have brothers and sisters but the bible meant cousins…fine.
Then on page 135 the author teaches us: “I’ll say it again: adelphos means “from the same womb.”
So brothers and sisters mean cousins for Jesus’ siblings but real brothers from the same womb for everyone else. Kind of a double standard if you ask me.
How does that work? Beats me.
That’s just one example.
Also Eve being the church doesn’t add up.
“Like Adam, Jesus was led to a “tree” where He was striped naked. Like Adam, He fell into the deep sleep of death, so that from his side would come forth the New Eve, His bride, the Church.” (Hail Holy Queen, Hahn, p. 32)
Jesus’ body is the church not his rib (Eve):
“And he is the head of the body, the church…” (Colossians 1:18 KJV)
The bride are those taken from the body who have wedding “garments” (Mat 22) or “righteous acts.”
If you get technical it seems that God was Adam’s father and the earth was his mother and the Holy Spirit was the seed God planted in the earth to make Man. Then God took the rib from Adam and made Eve his bride.
In the Spiritual New Testament version then it seems that God is still the father – the Holy Spirit is still the seed and Mary (the Mother) represents “Spiritual Earth”. The body of Christ is the church. And the overcoming elect from the church represent the rib taken from Jesus’ side while he “slept”.
The church is the “body” of Jesus not his bride. The bride are those taken from the church who “overcome” the flesh and the world. So Eve is the “the elect” or “rib” taken from the church or body of Christ. Eve is a subset of the church as the rib is a subset of the body of Christ. That’s why the scripture says: “For many are called, but few are chosen.” (Matthew 22:14 KJV)
So the new “spiritual” earth is Mary in type and shadow not in reality. And Eve is the “flesh” or material earth from which “fallen mankind” comes.
That’s my two cents worth.
Easy and fun read.

The book came in great condition but took too long getting here. I ordered 4 items at the same time and they all came within 3-5 days and this took 2 weeks to get here. Don’t believe it when they say it was shipped the next day … I was sent an email informing me of that and then waited and waited.

An incredibly well-written, easy to understand explanation of why Mary is/should be an important part of any Christian’s life (not just Catholics). Scott Hahn books are always incredible and this one is no different. He explains why Marian devotion is important with biblical references and with Church doctrine references. He also tells of how he came to know Mary better and how that has blessed his life. This is obviously a good book for Catholics to read to understand their faith better but is also a great book for non-Catholics, as well.

If you are going to purchase or need to purchase one book about Mary, this is the one. Don’t waste your time trying to purchase any other. Why do you ask? It is very simple and only a catholic would understand. Most catholics are not bible readers like protestants. Scott Hahn has both a degree in ancient biblical studies (reads and understands both Greek and Hebrew/Aramaic) and can present biblical facts as no other can. He approaches the bible as he approached it as a protestant preacher but now writes his assessments in a way that is understood by most catholics. Mr. Hahn is a great writer and we are lucky to have him now as our teacher. Hail, Holy Queen gave me new insight into the Dogma’s of Mary, both in the new and old testament. This is a keeper.

A great book for anyone wanting to delve deeper into Mary’s life. Lot’s of scripture references and in depth analysis by Hahn. I enjoyed the book and will probably come back to it in the future, since it is an excellent source of references on Mary. Worth your time.
