If you roll your eyes at crunchy-granola phrases like “the dance of breastfeeding” then you won’t be able to stomach this book. It talks a lot about how the formula companies are unethical and even references formula to be as bad as smoking??? I was uncomfortable with such a close-minded view.

Most of the information was very good, as far as latch-on etc, but the photos look like they were taken in the 70′s and are not helpful. The book repeats itself and never really answers the difficult questions. I think there are better books out there.

It is a good recourse to have, but don’t use it as a “nursing bible” or you will think you are doing EVERYTHING wrong.

I found “What to Expect the 1st Year” had a MUCH better section on breastfeeding that was user friendly and not mean to those that struggle.

  3. I love how this book is written but I feel it is very biased against formula. I have a 9 week old son that I started out breastfeeding with but had to supplement in the beginning with formula because I wasn’t producing enough yet for him to get full. Now I am at that point so I’m not using formula like before. However, you might as well feel like the worst mom out there for giving your baby formula, according to this book. I do not work but am a full time student so I can’t just feed him sometimes like I need to. I’m currently resetting my milk production because of this and have done very well I believe but if I hadn’t had formula, I would have had a screaming hungry baby. I do love this book because it has helped me with my breastfeeding issues like me not feeding like I should have been and helped me see a side that my doctors never told me about, like that feeding formula to a baby can make you overfeed them or the time/oz rules that doctors tell you to follow aren’t really that applicable to breastfeeding.

Overall, I loved this book but because I had no choice but to use formula I felt like a terrible mother for doing so. I have and definitely do recommend this book!
